You did your part in helping to flatten the curve.

You spent as much time as possible staying at home… physical distancing… exercising caution when you did go out… and then you wore a mask when asked to do so.

You deserve a vacation!

Alas, thanks to the continued threat from the global COVID-19 pandemic, our travel options these days are sadly limited.

It seems like enough of a venturing out, at the time of this article being published, to go enjoy a patio or a socially-distanced meal. Maybe you’ve expanded your isolation bubble. Or perhaps you’ve retreated to a cottage or enjoyed some of the local trails.

For those looking to travel further in the foreseeable future, your best bet could be in an RV, trailer or camper.

In this edition of Travel-Mor Ottawa RV Blog, we’ll take a look at some of the spots that you can reach with your RV or trailer that are within reasonable proximity to Ottawa – and aren’t (at the time of writing) severely impacted by COVID-19 restrictions.

Ottawa RV Travel to the US Is – For Now – Out of the Question

We’ve written quite a bit in the past here about taking trips by RV from Ottawa to visit that land just to the south of us: The USA.

As we all know, however, the USA-Canada border has been closed since March, and at the time of publishing remains closed to recreational travel including Ottawa RV enthusiasts seeking a road trip in the States.

Should the border reopen within the 2020 RV season, we will, of course, update our Ottawa RV blog to reflect the potential for late summer or fall trips from Ottawa. RV & trailer owners and enthusiasts, stay tuned and watch this space.

Ottawa RV Journeys through Quebec, La Belle Province

Looking for a great weekend or extended RV road trip?

You could do a lot worse than Quebec.

Let’s start with the short trips (overnights and weekends) into Quebec for Ottawa RV folks looking to get out onto the open road for a spell.

From Ottawa, Gatineau, the Outaouais and Eastern Ontario, it’s an easy hop to some great RVing and sightseeing opportunities in Quebec.

The big one is Montreal, of course. Now you probably won’t be taking that rig into the city – it’s bad enough driving a car there – but RV parks and campsites in the Montreal outskirts give you easy access to the city. This is a great option if you have a trailer or camper and want to unhitch your car or truck to take that into town.

The beauty of doing Montreal this way is that you have your accommodations with you. No worries about paying for pricey hotel or Airbnb – and you’re in full control of cleanliness and sanitizing the facility. That’s huge during this COVID pandemic!

Up the road a ways in Quebec, you’ve got Quebec City, the beautiful, historic capital. You’ll find a few nearby camp sites and RV parks giving you good access to the city and its nearby attractions, such as Montmorency Falls and Ile d’Orleans.

Went to venture further afield? If you’ve got more time, you’ll find great options on either side of the St Lawrence – such as Mont Ste Anne, Charlevoix and Sageunay on the north shore; with Riveiere du Loup on the south shore, and, for the grand tour, the Gaspe Peninsula.

Ottawa RV Journeys through Ontario

Pointing your trailer, RV or camper in the other direction, Ottawa RV enthusiasts have the whole province of Ontario ahead of them.

Going for a short hop or a long weekend?

You’ve got all kinds of options along the St Lawrence River and up into Central Ontario.

From Cornwall to Morrisburg to the Thousand Islands and Kingston, RV & trailer journeys give you all kinds of scenery, history and enjoyment for the summer and into the autumn.

Feel the breeze off the water, watch the colours turn vibrant shades, or enjoy great local produce and fine foods.

West of Kingston along Lake Ontario are some great sites, especially in Prince Edward County and the Bay of Quinte. Wineries here are great, too, as is the dining and local shopping.

North from the river puts you into the Kawarthas and Peterborough, with Algonquin Park beyond that.

You’ll definitely want to plan ahead when visiting beautiful Algonquin Park, as RV spaces can and do fill up quickly.

Ontario is a vast land, so the more time you’ve got, the more you can see.

Want a city stopover? Toronto and the GTA are on the way.

Are you a wine lover? Niagara has got plenty of great vineyards. Just make sure one of you is a designated driver!

Southwest Ontario stretches from the GTA all the way to Michigan*, with ample opportunity for sightseeing and making the most of your RV journey. (*beware of border regulations)

Northern Ontario and Northwest Ontario offer vast wilderness and hundreds of kilometres of open road.
