Propane Tank Recertification

How often should you get your propane tank recertified? It depends on whether you have a permanent or temporary propane tank in your RV or Trailer. In either case, you need to ensure that the propane tanks are safe, and are certified.

DOT cylinders tanks are the most commonly used propane tanks on travel trailers, smaller motorhomes, and truck campers. These propane tanks can be mounted on or in exterior compartments. Newly purchased exterior propane tanks should be good for 10 years before needing recertification. After the initial 10 years, they also need to be recertified every 10 years.

* We do not recertify propane tanks. We are happy to recommend a place to get your propane tanks recertified, but we don’t do it at our facility*

Frequently Asked Questions

How can you tell if your propane tank is expired?
The tank manufacturer date should be stamped into the metal near the primary valve. It’s possible that this area has been painted over – it’s a standard practice to keep tanks looking like new. If your propane tank has been recently re-certified, there should also be a stamp on the upper portion of the tank.
How often do you have to re-certify propane tanks?
Portable propane cylinders that are used in RV’s, trailers, and campers need to be re-certified 10 years after the manufacturing date. Propane tanks need to be certified every 10 years and aren’t legally allowed to be filled unless they’ve been re-certified.
Is there a penalty for not re-certifying a propane tank?
No. There is no set fine or fee for using a propane tank that’s more than 10 years old. However, you will need to get it re-certified to get it refilled. Propane refill retailers are required by law to check the recertification date on your tank.
What is involved in the propane tank re-certification process?
A certified propane technician will use specific tools to test the pressure of the main valve and to check for leaks. The most common issue with a propane tank is with the valve – the re-certification process might include upgrading or replacing the main valve. Once re-certified, your propane tank is good for another 10 years.
Can you test your own propane tank?
No. By law, only a certified professional with the right training and certification can test or physically modify a propane tank. Attempting to modify or manipulate your propane tank in any way can result in a big fine or can lead to serious injuries. Even if you’re handy and “know what you’re doing”, please leave it to the professionals.
Is it cheaper to re-certify or to buy a new propane tank?
Buying a new propane tank will definitely cost you more than the fee for getting your existing tank re-certified. If you have an older propane tank that has already been recertified more than once, then it might be in your best interest to buy a brand new tank. If you’re unsure about which option is best for you, contact the RV and trailer experts at Travel-Mor for guidance!
