If you’re an RVer based in Ottawa, Eastern Ontario or Western Quebec, you know all too well that winter puts a damper on RVing for most of us.

Sure, there are the snowbirds out there who take their rig south for the winters.

For the rest of us, though, winter means parking your trailer or RV for months on end.

Bookending the winter are two annual rituals: Preparing your rig for winter storage, and de-winterizing your RV or trailer once spring has finally arrived.

In this edition of the Travel-Mor Ottawa RV & Trailer Blog, we’ll take a look at what you’ll want to do for trailer, camper or RV de-winterization in the spring, as well as some possible spring RV road trips to start planning.

De-Winterizing Your RV or Trailer: Getting Prepared & Ready to Hit the Road in Spring

Every RVer in Ottawa or nearby parts of Ontario or Quebec – all of us who haven’t gone south for the winter, anyway – eagerly awaits the arrival of spring.

recreational vehicle undergoing maintenanceFor many trailer and RV enthusiasts, spring means the rejuvenation of our travels.

The hints of warmer breezes in the air, the melting of snow and ice, and the forecast and promise of balmier temperatures all mean one thing:

RV travel can’t be far behind.

Now, as eager as we all are to hit the open road, there are some RV / trailer maintenance, care and service essentials to take care of before taking on any travels.

If you winterized your trailer or RV back in the fall (and we sure hope you did, otherwise there could be some real issues you’re facing now or in the near future!), you know that de-winterizing your RV or trailer is the next step.

Trailer / RV de-winterizing is a ritual for many in these parts of Canada. While you may be dreading the chores, these are a definite must before you take your rig out to play.

What to Do for Trailer / RV De-Winterizing

We’ve covered the core steps and activities for RV & trailer de-winterizing tips in some of our previous articles, such as these:

In a nutshell, the process entails the following steps:

  1. recreational vehicle parked at camp siteCheck your batteries
  2. Make sure water systems are fully functional
  3. Assess all safety systems and components
  4. Take a look at the generator & powertrain and service as needed
  5. Inspect all seals, gaskets and seams
  6. Kick those tires – or at least make sure they’re filled and free of leaks
  7. Check the LP gas systems

If you’re comfortable taking on all these tasks and consider yourself handy, you should be able to tackle these RV/trailer de-winterizing steps in a matter of days. Just be sure that you’re confident all is good to go before you hit the road.

Springtime Travel Ideas in a Trailer or RV from Ottawa

family enjoying recreational vehicleSpeaking of spring trailer/RV season, it’s fast approaching. And we’re as excited as you are to get rolling in our rigs out on the open road.

Now, at the time of publishing for this article, Ottawa RV and trailer enthusiasts were limited in the scope of our travel to domestic trips only, due to the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic. That means no RV travel across the border to the US.

Our RV journeys are also subject to prevailing conditions and regulations in Ontario and any other province you may wish to visit. If “lockdown” or “stay at home” orders are in place, you may need to stay put and postpone any trailer/RV travel plans until such time as it is safe and legal to do so.

Assuming things open up again – and there’s reason to think so, as more of the population receives the COVID vaccines – there’s always room for hope and optimism for our RV travels!

Where would you like to go?

Here are some ideas.

RV travels within Ontario

You can start by venturing out not too far from your home base in Ottawa or nearby areas, making your way south to the St Lawrence and enjoying picturesque scenery from Cornwall / Long Sault to the Thousand Islands region to Kingston and beyond.

To the west of Ottawa you’ve got Westport and Merrickville, and to the northwest are Calabogie, Algonquin Park, the Kawarthas and points beyond (North Bay, Sudbury, etc.)

Keeners who have an extended road trip in mind can take in the Greater Toronto Area, Niagara, Barrie, the Muskokas, Bruce Peninsula, Manitoulin Island. Also, there are practically endless possibilities for RVing along and around the Great Lakes (Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario).

RVing in Quebec & The Maritimes

recreational vehicle undergoing maintenanceHeading in the other direction from Ottawa, your journeys can begin in La Belle Province, in or near Montreal and venturing north or east from there.

The Tremblant region offers late season skiing as well as spring and summer fun.

East of Montreal are the Eastern Townships, and further afield are Quebec City, the Gaspe peninsula, Charlevoix and many other places of beauty.

Past Quebec, for an extended RV road trip, you’ve got all of eastern Canada on your horizon – the Maritime provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island) as well as Newfoundland.
