Driving a Travel-Mor Trailer RentalStart With the Mechanics

Like any vehicle that spends time on the road, the mechanical elements are incredibly important! After all, it will be holding precious cargo – you, and your family! So, no matter where you buy your RV or used trailer from in the Ottawa area, always make sure you ask the right questions. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty either and check under the hood for yourself.

Start by looking at the frame. Is it badly rusted? Are there any cracks, or broken welds? If so, you might want to move on to the next trailer on the lot. Next up, look at the tires, wheels, and axles. Ideally, the tires should not be any more than 5 years old. If they are, get used to the idea of replacing them pretty soon! Also, make sure to have the wheel bearings and the electric brake system checked by a professional.

Check Out the Inside

Of course, you might want to start with these as a qualifier and then have your shortlist checked by a professional mechanic. Start by looking for leaks in the ceiling, soft spots in the floor, and how all the doors and windows are operating.

Once you have checked out the inside, walk around the trailer or RV. Are the fiberglass side walls started to peel or separate? If so, this may indicate an expensive repair. Same with the aluminum siding, how is it holding up? Are there any loose panels, punctures, or dents? And of course, how are the windows looking. Replacing windows on any RV or trailer is time consuming and expensive. Your best bet is to make sure they will make it through your first few years before needing replacement. Make sure to open and close all the windows and doors to ensure they are working perfectly.

Lastly, take a look at all of the interior appliances. Trailer and RV sized appliances are deceptively expensive, so make sure they are in excellent working order! Don’t forget to take a look at the decor. Is it out of date? Will it need to be re-carpeted or re-floored? What fixtures will come with the trailer? Are the curtains staying?
