When You’re Reading This Could Dictate the Destination & Journey
At the time of publication, Ontario and Quebec were still struggling with COVID-19 and the many frustrations of dealing with this global pandemic.
As this past year has taught us, patience, flexibility and creativity are the keys to your trailer or RV holiday during pandemic times.
Though we must emphasize once again, compared to other forms of travel, we recreational vehicle enthusiasts have it pretty good. Why’s that?
Well, we don’t have to worry about virus transmission in restaurants or accommodations, as we’re bringing those along in our RV or trailer. Even social distancing on the journey is more feasible, as we’re not exposed to others sharing the same airplane cabin, train car, bus, etc.
The only precautions you’ll need to focus on are when you’re out of your RV or vehicle and mixing out and about with people – such as at campsites, grocery stores, attractions and whatnot. Please be sure to follow health advisories while travelling.
Which Direction Would You like to Travel with Your RV, Trailer or Camper?
For Ottawa RV owners and trailer enthusiasts, the choices on which direction to point your vehicle basically amount to a handful.
- Ontario RV road trips
- Quebec road trips in RVs, trailers & campers
- Prairies & Western Canada RV adventure
- RVing in the USA
For the fourth option, of course, you’ll have to be sure that the US-Canada border is open and that you are willing and able to comply with regulations and precautions.
But let’s leave that for last, starting with your big three Canadian RV & trailer road trip options.
Ontario RV Road Trips
Canada’s most populated province, Ontario begins in your backyard in (or near) Ottawa and sprawls for thousands of kilometres to the west and north.
Whether you’ve got a free weekend or are gearing up for the long haul, Ottawa RV and trailer owners have a plethora of choices when it comes to road trips within the province.
Trailer & RV Long Weekends: The St. Lawrence, Kingston, Price Edward County, Algonquin Park & More
You can enjoy any one of these destinations for your long weekend, or combine two, three or more for a week or two (or more!) of RV, trailer or camper adventures.
The amazing St. Lawrence Seaway stretches from the Ontario-Quebec border near Cornwall, past Long Sault, Upper Canada Village and Morrisburg to the Thousand Islands Region and Kingston, where it meets Lake Ontario.
In this part of Ontario you’ll find plenty of opportunity to kick back in your RV, trailer or camper, as there are ample campgrounds and RV sites to spend a night or two (or more). The sights are aplenty in this area, with abundant nature specked by history, culture, recreational activity and more.
From small towns to cities to quaint rural areas and bucolic countryside, this is quintessential Ontario.
Further Afield in Ontario
So, too, is the case if you go further afield, with Prince Edward County to the south, and Algonquin Park to the north.
You can’t go wrong with either of these locales, though each has its merits and attractions. Algonquin Park is, of course, more nature oriented and ideal for hiking and the like, while Prince Edward County is famous for wineries as well as Sandbanks Provincial Park.
At both of these places (and in many others in Ontario and Quebec, especially in 2021, you’ll want to reserve RV or trailer sites early as demand tends to outpace supply.
Elsewhere in Ontario, you’ve got your pick from the Niagara region to the Muskokas, the Blue Coast and Bruce Grey Simcoe to Manitoulin Island and much more.
Quebec RV & Trailer holidays
If you live in Ottawa, the Outaouais or elsewhere in Eastern Ontario, you’re within easy reach of some great Quebec RVing destinations.
Mt. Tremblant is within a couple hours’ drive and offers not just great skiing in the winter but great fun and spectacular scenery in the spring, summer and fall.
Montreal and Quebec City are both excellent city break options, ideal if you’re leaving the trailer at a campsite and driving into town for the day or even an overnight.
The Eastern Townships of Quebec are beautiful in the fall and offer scenery and recreation year-round.
Further afield in La Belle Province, you’ve got the Gaspe Peninsula, Charlevoix region and many other areas from which to choose.
Western Canada RV Adventure
How far west in Canada you can go RVing is generally only limited by how much time and budget you have – as well as the Pacific Ocean, of course.
We’ve published articles in the past about Western Canada RV adventures, and we invite you to read one here.
No matter where you’re headed, but especially for a long haul like this trip, be sure that your rig is well serviced and ready for the road for weeks ahead.
RVing in the USA
Eventually the border will be open again and the US will be back on the radar for RV and trailer trips.
From long weekends along the St Lawrence (on both sides) or further into beautiful Upstate New York or New England, crossing the border opens up all sorts of options.
Lake Placid offers fantastic skiing and snowboarding in the winter, and is beautiful in the summer and fall.
Vermont and New Hampshire offer scenic beauty, history, New England charm and local cuisine.
Maine takes that and adds the closest ocean coast to Ottawa. Beaches and lobster rolls – you can’t go wrong!
Depending on how long you’re planning to be on the road, you’ve got the entire Lower 48 providing destinations. Choices… choices.
